Ultra trail pacing and planning: common questions

Short answers about using UltraTrailPlan: what is free, what files it accepts, how the pacing model works, and what it does not do.

Is UltraTrailPlan free?

Yes. GPX import, route analysis, the planner, pacing, fueling, Auto-Detect and the printable sheet are free. Premium adds cloud sync, crew sharing, the full race library, extra map tiles, 3D terrain and plan comparison. The free features work without an account.

Do I need an account?

Not for the free features. An account is needed for cloud sync and sharing, which are Premium features.

What files can I import?

GPX files. A GPX file saved with an .xml extension also works. A recorded activity needs timestamps and elevation for Auto-Detect. FIT files and other XML formats (such as TCX) are not supported.

How does the pacing model work?

It works out the time for each part of the route from its grade, then adjusts for fatigue, altitude, surface and darkness. You can set a flat pace or a finish time. The pacing guide has an example plan.

How accurate is the plan?

It is an empirical model, not a lab measurement. It was checked against recorded races. The result depends on the route, the elevation data and the values you enter, so treat it as a plan rather than a guarantee.

What is Auto-Detect?

You'll find Auto-Detect in the planner's Profile step. It reads a recorded GPX and estimates your flat pace, fatigue, climb and descent strength, and night and altitude penalties. It reports a confidence level and does not apply the values until you choose Apply to Profile.

Can I print the plan?

Yes. The planner exports a PDF or opens the print dialog, with the pacing and fueling tables and a wristband card. Printing is free.

Can I share a plan?

Yes, with an account and Premium. Share links last 90 days and can be revoked.

Is the race library official?

No. UltraTrailPlan is independent and not affiliated with any race or organiser. The library uses public race information, and each race links to the organiser's site.

Does it work offline?

You can install the app and open local plans without a connection, but the map tiles are not cached, so the planner is limited offline. Cloud sync and sharing need a connection.

What is plan comparison?

A Premium beta feature that lines a recorded GPX up with the plan at the start, at each detected aid stop, and at the finish, then shows the differences. The recording is not saved.

Read the guides, then build a plan.
